What is Growth Mindset?
Carol Dweck, a psychologist, made an important discovery about our children’s learning. Children’s belief about their intelligence can have a strong connection to their motivation and their academic achievement - - their mindset.
There are two mindsets:
Fixed Mindset: the belief that intelligence is unchanged over time
Growth Mindset: the belief that intelligence can increase with hard work
A child’s mindset affects their academic achievement in school and in life. Growth Mindset children respond well to challenges. Fixed Mindset children view challenges as a test of their intelligence and that mistakes should be avoided.
What is the benefit of a Growth Mindset?
Children will achieve more when they have a Growth Mindset. Their successes will be easier to achieve and they will gain the willpower to continue pushing themselves to learn even more. They learn that failure (because of the understanding that you don’t know it YET) becomes an invitation to keep trying until they are successful.
