There was so much excitement in our classroom today. When your children arrived this morning they were greeted by four new Painted Lady Butterflies. During the course of the day, one more Painted Lady joined in on the fun. This afternoon we released and said "goodbye and safe travels" to our five new butterflies. Two more chrysalises are still in our butterfly cage, just waiting to burst out.

Your children will notice a wonderful surprise when they enter the classroom this morning - we have four butterflies! Very exciting.
Reading Buddies Rock! We had so much fun getting together with our 4th grade Reading Buddies last week for our first multi-age project. What would fall be like without an apple tree! Check out our Apple Tree and our Buddy pictures. Did your child tell you about our caterpillars? By observing and recording every day, the Fire Flames Scientists were able to witness the formation of the chrysalis. When your child arrives back at school on Monday they will notice that our butterfly cage is full. Now we are anxiously awaiting our first Painted Lady butterfly! This week with our Wonders program we will be reviewing the letters/sounds for Kk (and ck at the end of words), Uu, Gg, Ww, Xx, Vv, Q, Jj, Yy, and Zz. Our sight word review will be: are, me, she, with, for, and, have, see, said, was. With our Everyday Mathematics program we will be solving number stories to help us practice adding and subtracting within 20, counting larger numbers as we navigate the number grid, and then ending up the week with our first unit assessment. We are gearing up for our Harvest Festival on Friday. For Friday, please send your child to school with sneakers (we will be doing lots of running) and comfortable “harvest type” clothing (jeans, comfortable shirt) and a water bottle (Friday’s temperature is going to be warm). Reminder: Picture Day in Monday, September 25th.
Please join me on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. to hear all about our classroom. I am looking forward to sharing your child’s day with you. This is a parent/guardian event only. We learned a fun math game today, it is called The Penny-Dice Game. The directions were sent home to you.
During Writer’s Workshop we learned how to add details to our writing…just by adding some color words. We had our second Music class with Mr. Saunders. The story of the Three Billy Goat Gruff ended our day…with lots of laughter as several of our classmates took on the role of the Troll. Today we took two of our high frequency words (I, like) and created sentences. Mrs. Kierstead and I were so impressed with what your children wrote. We had sentences about the animals, friends, and siblings. Writing is such a magical time in the classroom….we are off to a great start.
We used the number line to count and compare numbers today. Counting by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s was fun, especially when we counted along to a Jack Hartmann song. Mrs. Dana came in today for Social Thinking. Last year we learned about whole body listening, following the group plan, being part of the group, thought bubbles, and that our eyes are like arrows. This year the program continues with us learning about hidden rules and expected and unexpected behaviors. Our last exciting moment of the day was visiting Mrs. Charles. We will be heading to our school library each Monday afternoon. Because we are in First Grade, each child is able to check out a book and bring it back to the classroom. Within a few weeks, these books will be able to go home to share with you. Another great day in First Grade. What a great first week together. We spent quite a bit of time learning routines, going over classroom and school expectations, and getting acquainted with new friends and reacquainted with old ones. Speaking of expectations – has your child shared with you that our classroom and school has only three rules to follow? They are:
We have a class name! After brainstorming and coming up with about a dozen possible names and then narrowing our choices down to three, we voted and picked the name that received the most votes. So...we are now the Fire Flames. Lots of fun activities are planned for this upcoming week. Stay tuned... We had such a great first day together today. Reading the book, First Day Jitters, we talked about how each of us were "a little nervous with butterflies in our stomach's". We then did our first Problem Solver. We discovered that counting by two’s was the way to go! Lunch was in the cafeteria and then outside for recess. We had Music with Mr. Saunders . Before we knew it, it was time to pack up and go home. We did notice that our classroom got quite warm today. Please send in a water bottle with your child for them to keep at their desk. Please make sure it has a solid, closing top and it is spill-proof and non-breakable. We are trying to stay hydrated during the course of the day. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
Welcome to First Grade at New Boston Central School. I am thrilled to be welcoming so many outstanding children into our classroom.
I hope you have had an exciting summer, I sure did. One of my favorite pastimes is reading and I have been able to read so many books this summer. I bet you have also read some great books. During the first few days of school I would love to be able to share our favorite books with each other. In your welcome letter you will find a blank outline of a book cover. Please decorate your book cover with information about your favorite book - - be sure to include the book title and your name. I can’t wait to hear about all of the books that you have loved reading. The only school supplies that you will need are a backpack and a pocket folder (binders are too big for our mailboxes and NBCS will provide all of your writing and art supplies). Your pocket folder and backpack will be used to bring papers to and from school. For the pocket folder, you can pick any design or color that you would like – your choice. We have found that the flat, heavy cardboard or plastic folders seem to be the most durable and will fit the best in your mailbox. Please label your backpack and folder with your first and last name. Please bring your book cover with you on the first day of school, (September 5th). I would love to meet you before school begins. Please feel free to drop into the classroom on Thursday, August 31, 2017 from 1:30 – 2:30. You will have a chance to see our new classroom and get reacquainted with friends. I am sure you have many questions for me at this point. Bring your questions and your smiles with you. I am looking forward to an outstanding year together. **Mark your calendar: Back-to-School Night 9/19/17 (more details to come later). |
