This week with our Wonders program we will focus on the Essential Question of: How do things get built? We will be talking and reading about different structures and how they are built.
Our phonics will look at more diphthongs: oi, oy. Our spelling words are: spoil, coin, join, joy, toy, boy Our Sight Words are: build, fall - - with exposure to: above, knew, money, toward. Our grammar focus will be prepositions and prepositional phrases. We will learn about final stable syllables (mid/dle). With our Everyday Mathematics program we will be finishing up our Unit 8 assessment and then start Unit 9. We will continue adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers, review the greater than/less than symbols, place value, geometry, and fractions. This Friday, First Grade will be involved in an exciting opportunity within our town- - planting trees. A permission slip will be going home early in the week with additional details. Also this week we will be participating in the Artist in Residence program with Mark Ragonese. We will be creating and stamping tie-dyed flags. All of the NBCS students will then be writing their Dream, Wish, or Believe statement on these flags - - which will then hang outside on the playground. This week with our Wonders program we will focus on the Essential Question of: What sounds can you hear? How are they made? This will be a nice follow-up to our previous Science lesson on sounds and vibrations. Our phonics will be on diphthongs: ou, ow. Our spelling words are: cow, town, mouse, how, out, mouth Our Sight Words are: nothing, early - - with exposure to: color, instead, oh, thought. Our grammar focus will be using “a” and “an”. We will review capitalization and underlining of book titles. With our Everyday Mathematics program we will be finishing up Unit 8. This has been such a fun math unit involving fractions and telling time. Your children can easily look at a fractional part of a shape and correctly label the pieces. With clocks they can correctly identify and label time to the hour and half hour. Be on the lookout for Signup Genius – it is time for Spring Conferences. I can’t wait to share the learning and growth that has occurred this year. Our Student Council has designated this Friday, the 20th, to be Crazy Day. Crazy shirts, crazy hats, crazy socks! Your children were amazing at the Community Meeting. So many teachers and students came up to us to compliment your children on their performance. This week with our Wonders program we will focus on the Essential Question of: What inventions do you know about? We will read and learn about various inventors and inventions. Our phonics will continue with more r-controlled vowels: or, ore, oar Our spelling words are: born, corn, core, more, roar, soar Our Sight Words are: learn, sure - - with exposure to: began, better, guess, right. Our grammar focus will be adjectives that compare (er, est). This week we will be writing our Research Reports on various New Hampshire Animals. Last Thursday and Friday we were so fortunate to have a visit from Mrs. Makowiecki, an expert on New Hampshire wildlife, and four sixth grade students. We viewed an outstanding PowerPoint that the Sixth Grade students had prepared for us giving us so many facts about these animals. The next day they returned with even more information - - plus skulls and pelts. Mrs. Makowiecki is well-known throughout the state and gets calls when animal carcasses have been found. A huge thank you to the Bradley family for also providing pelts. This hands-on, enrichment opportunity was amazing! We will be reviewing clocks and fractions this week. We love fractions – ask your child to fill you in on these wonderful math concepts. We are all set to perform at tomorrow's Community Meeting. It looks like we will be 19th on the agenda. The Community Meeting starts at 8:30. Make sure to bring your cameras.
We will be presenting 19th - which is near the end of the Community Meeting. Make sure you bring your camera to capture your adorable children.
