This week with our Wonders program we will focus on the Essential Question: How do animals’ bodies help them? We will be reading folktales about a beaver and a bat. What are some other features that animals have to help them? We will continue this discussion all week long.
Our phonic focus is Long Vowel Aa with the spelling patterns of: ai and ay. Your children are getting really good at spotting long vowels when they end in “magic e”. They understand that the “e” makes the vowel say its name. This week they will learn about “two vowels walking...with the first one doing the talking”. The spelling words for the week are: mail, rain, chain, way, play, day Sight Words: our, carry - - with exposure to: about, animal, eight, give We will be learning about the past-tense verbs: was, were. We will continue reviewing contractions. In Science we investigated the question of: How can the sun help you if you are lost? We learned that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. We made a Sun Finder to help us remember the different locations that we see the sun during the day. We were able to watch two mini-lessons on Mystery Science. First, we learned about our heart and then we discovered why airplanes can’t travel into space. Did your child show you their paper airplane? We had so much fun flying them in the classroom. Has your child told you about Scrolling? This is a great number sense activity - - we have several children already up into the 2,000’s. Scrolling also helps to discover the pattern and ease of counting by 10’s. We will be participating in the school-wide Bobcat Pride Week. Here is reminder of the week’s events: Monday: NBCS Pride – dress in our school colors: blue & yellow Tuesday: Animal Print Day – wear animal print clothing or you can bring in a favorite stuffed animal. It MUST fit in easily in your child’s backpack. Wednesday: Tropical Day Thursday: Camp Day Friday: Parade of Nations - we will be representing Australia in our Relay Race Challenge/Pep Rally. Mrs. Winchell organized such a fun Kids Heart Challenge day last Friday. We cycled through four highly-engaging (and challenging) activities. A huge thank you to Mrs. Winchell, Ms. Kjellander, Mrs. Charles, and Mrs. Chalson. A huge thank you to everyone for your help with our Friendship Celebration on Friday. We enjoyed a delicious brunch and your children loved passing our their cards. This week with our Wonders program we will focus on the Essential Question of: How do we get our food? We will be reading about where some of our favorite foods come from…chocolate…honey…sugar. Yum! Shelley Rotner and Gary Goss share pictures and facts about these foods in their book, Where does food come from?
Our phonics focus is the long vowel sound of Uu, which is spelled: “oo”. Our spelling words are: book, look, cook, took, hood, wood Sight Words: buy, done (with exposure to these additional words: after, every, soon, work) We will be reviewing contractions with “not” and learning about “inflectional endings”. We have finished up Unit 5 in our Everyday Mathematics program. Wow – your children are amazing with their understanding of place value and expanded notation. Has your child shared all their knowledge about shadows? Ask them to tell you why some shadows are long and some are short. This week in our Wonders program we will focus on the Essential Question: How is life different than it was long ago? We can’t wait to hear what your children think “long ago” means. How are schools different? Transportation? Food? We will be heading to the New Boston Historical Society on Thursday. What was life like in New Boston long ago? We can’t wait to find out.
Our phonics focus will be Long Vowel Oo and Long Vowel Uu, with the following spelling words: hope, nose, note, rope, cute, cube Sight Words: ago, people We continue to do a lot of writing in class with a focus on generating ideas, organization our ideas so they have a beginning, a middle, an ending, and adding wonderful words to help describe our writing and make it more exciting. Last week we learned a new type of writing – Research/Informative Text. Using some of the characters from last week’s folktale story (The Mitten by Jan Brett) your child chose one of the following animals to research: Red Fox Badger Hedgehog Black Bear Snowshoe Rabbit Using articles from PebbleGo to guide them, details were written down about their habitat, food, life cycle, or some fun and interesting facts. We were so impressed with these reports. We will be putting these up on our bulletin board outside our classroom door for the entire school to enjoy. Shadows was the perfect science investigation this week. Before we began our investigation some of our wondering questions were: Why are shadows black? How are shadows made? Why do shadows follow us? Why don’t shadows appear? Do shadows have shadows? Using Mystery Science’s guiding question: “Could a statue’s shadow move?” we began our investigation with shadows. We discovered that the sun had a direct impact on the shadow and that the sun traveling across the sky will make it look like a shadow is moving. This investigation then led us to talk about Groundhog Day and the “superstition” that surrounded this event. Your child created a picture of the groundhog looking at his shadow. This morning it was announced that Phil did not see his shadow and he predicts an early Spring! |
