Due to the warmer temperatures and the anticipated rain - - please make sure your child has an extra set of clothes (and socks) in their backpacks. There are not enough extra pairs available if your child gets wet. Thanks!!

Last Friday we learned about Presidents' Day and then did a project on our first president George Washington and our 16th president Abraham Lincoln. We will continue learning more about our Presidents this week.
The Essential Question with our Wonders program is: How do animals help each other? We will be talking and reading about how animals help each other when looking for food, eating, and sometimes survival. This week we have a new long vowel study: Ee with the spelling patterns of e, ea, ee: me, feed, seat, we, keep, beak Our Sight Words are: other, because - - with exposure to: blue, into, or, small Our math program will look at place value and money. We will be working with a “flat” which represents 100. $1.25 would look like: 1 flat, 2 longs, five cubes. Fact triangles were a great discovery last week. We already know about the Commutative Property of Addition (turn-around facts). If 5 + 3 = 8 then 3 + 5 = 8. Using just the numbers 3, 5, 8 we know two additional subtraction facts automatically: 8 – 5 = 3, 8 – 3 = 5. Did your child tell you about their outstanding onomatopoeia? Amazing!! We will continue expanding our writing techniques this week when we focus on organization. What is a great topic sentence to start our writing? We will focus on grabbing the reader’s attention right away with just our first sentence. To help connect our Wonders learning with Science, we will look at: Why do birds have beaks? Why do baby ducks follow their mother? Finally a huge thank you to all for making our Friendship Celebration on Wednesday such a success. We are fortunate to have so many kind and caring friends in our classroom. Monday, May 21st is our Field Trip to Odiorne Point Just a reminder...if you are planning on joining us you must follow the school's policy of watching the Bullying Video and Fingerprinting.
Monday we will be celebrating the 100th day of school! Time sure flies! The First Grade and Readiness classrooms are planning some great activities to celebrate.
